I’ve blogged about Mexico’s newest drugs gang – the so-called Knights Templar (Caballeros Templarios) – and it seems they have been up to no good again.
Fox News Latino reports that a federal police helicopter was forced to land in western Mexico in territory where the gang operates. It came under attack by gunfire near a town called Apatzingan, in the state of Michoacan. The helicopter had been on routine patrol this week when the six officers were forced down and then to flee. This is the state which has proved to the the heartland of the Templarios.
As I said before, there is no resemblance to the Knights Templars that we know. But there is an attempt to evoke an idea of being noble warriors for the poor and oppressed – when in reality, I’m afraid all this gang is doing is the ignoble activity of drugs trafficking, extortion and kidnapping.
