The Citadel of Aleppo

One of the tragedies of the current civil war in Syria is how difficult it is for most of us to visit this beautiful country and its many medieval and Roman sites – including the splendid crusader fortress at Krak des Chevaliers (near to the war torn city of Homs).

Aleppo was hugely important to Saladin and the Saracens and was never taken by the crusaders. It was, however, taken by the Mongol armies who massacred the Muslims and Jews but not the Christians – as they made friendly overtures towards the Mongols – a point not lost on the Saracens when they returned.

Enjoy these lovely photos! Hopefully one day we can all visit the medieval citadel of Aleppo.
