Friday Photo: The Palace of the Porphyrogennetos

The Palace of those born into the purple – or rather its sad remains – in modern Istanbul, formerly the Byzantine capital Constantinople. The Byzantine empire was still a significant power during the crusades though it was during the Templar era that the city was destroyed during the Fourth Crusade – not by Saracens but by marauding, booty hungry crusaders. In 1453, a much diminished Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks.
