Me as Henry VIII on ITV in full costume!

I’ll do anything for a history related giggle. So when a production company asked if I’d dress up as Henry VIII – I could hardly say no. I’ve always loved the Tudors. Since my school history teacher regaled us with stories of priest holes, beheaded queens and ridiculous codpieces – well, what’s not to like?

So, you may have seen me dressed up as Henry VIII in The Sun this week.  The story was about the launch of a new ITV prime-time show called The Big AuditionEach week, viewers will follow the struggles of a group of candidates vying for three very interesting jobs!

I decided to throw my hat in the ring for one of those jobs but I can’t go into any details ahead of transmission. You’re going to have to watch at 9pm on Friday, 5 October to find out what happened. Just to say it was great fun filming and I suspect you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

For the record, I was able to recite the six wives of Henry VIII and their fates when I was ten years old. It was my party piece at school. Some kids knew the names of every player in their favourite football team and position. But I knew whether Ann Boleyn or Catherine Parr had been beheaded. Ask yourself – what’s more important to know?

Sadly, since I hired the lovely costume, the Angels theatrical and TV dress hire shop in London has shut its doors for the last time. That was an Aladdin’s cave of historical camp. You could literally thumb your way through Roman breastplates and medieval doublets. Oh well, all good things come to an end.

Tune in and watch The Big Audition on ITV.
