Knight Templar ghost hauntings

Templar ghost

It would seem that many Knights Templar are unwilling to lie easy in their graves. Instead, they have chosen to terrifying the living – maybe in revenge for their own terrible fate. Knight Templar ghost hauntings have been reported across Europe. Let’s look at some examples.

Prague’s headless Templar ghost

In the central European country of Czechia (the Czech Republic, formerly Czechoslovakia), a headless Templar ghost haunts Liliová Street – a quaint thoroughfare in the old town. He rides on horseback along the cobbled road carrying his head under his arm. By all accounts he’s very keen to be released from his ghostly state.

Should you wish to help this Templar ghost find eternal peace, you have to grab his sword and pierce him through the heart. He apparently shows up between midnight and 1am if you want to catch him. Quite what led him to lose his head is lost in the mists of time.

The Templar Ghost of Bristol

When you arrive in the English city of Bristol – in the south-west of the country – you alight from the train at Temple Meads station. This name points to the Templar presence in the city. Nearby are the ruins of a medieval church bombed during World War Two. The remains are of a rectangular church built in the late medieval, gothic style. But before that building was constructed, there was a circular Templar place of worship.

The area is called Temple Meads. There are many examples of former Templar properties in England indicated by the word “temple”. As for Meads, that comes from the Old English word “mædwe”, meaning meadow. Around this area, people have spotted a ghostly Templar who is missing his long disbanded brotherhood.

The Templar Ghost at Hannington

In the English county of Hampshire, you’ll find the town of Hannington. Take time out to visit the church of Saint John the Baptist – a saint much revered by the Templars. It’s one of those medieval gems that dot the country – great survivors.

To the right-hand side of the chancel arch, you can see the effigy of a knight Templar who lived, and died, at the preceptory in Crickdale. The legend recounts that this nameless knight was given responsibility for the church – and he clearly takes his duties very seriously. Because he’s still patrolling the place – only now as a ghost.

The Scottish Templar ghost at Maryculter

This Templar ghost story centres around a tragic romance between a knight and a Saracen woman. It’s a tale of forbidden love. Godfrey Wedderburn brought a Muslim woman back from the crusades to the preceptory where he was based at Maryculter in Scotland. The Preceptor, the leader of the Templar Order at Maryculter, refused to believe that the relationship between the knight and the Saracen woman was purely platonic, leading to conflict.

The Preceptor condemned the knight to death, and in despair, the knight stabbed himself, and the Saracen woman, after cursing the Preceptor. The ghost of the Saracen woman is said to appear over the knight’s tomb. As for the knight, he rides through the darkness, bemoaning his fate.
