Centuries ago, did a group of Knights Templar set sail from Europe with a precious cargo bound for a world that nobody could be sure existed? In their possession was the Holy Grail – the cup which held the blood of Christ, collected at the crucifixion. Their quest was to hide it, along with all their other treasures, in a place where it could never be retrieved by their enemies. After a long journey, the weary warriors set foot in America.
Many believe that a hundred years before Christopher Columbus, the Templars were the first Europeans to arrive on American shores. They were fugitives from papal justice. The old world had once lionised them as the greatest fighters for the Roman Catholic church in the Holy Land. But now, they were reviled as heretics and traitors. Some of their number had been burned to death in Paris for the crime of being a Templar.

Under cover of night, the knights had escaped from France, taking their ships from the port of La Rochelle and journeying north to Scotland. They had been sheltered by a Viking-Scottish noble clan, the Sinclairs. This family had a long association with their military order, with one of the earls having accompanied the first Templar grand master, Hugh de Payens, on crusade. Now they committed to protecting the Templars, no matter what.
For decades, the knights remained in Scotland, also forming close ties with the stone masons – an occupation with a secretive guild structure. Gradually, their rites and beliefs melded into one. And thus was born the phenomenon we know today as Freemasonry.

Using old Viking trade routes, the earl of Sinclair took the Templars to the New World in the late 14th century. They met and fraternised with local native people. And most crucially, they buried their treasure where it could not be found. This included the Holy Grail – brought all the way from Jerusalem.
The secrets of the Templars were transmitted through the generations and were inherited by the Freemasons of the 18th century who fought for, and created, the United States of America. It was the wealth of the knights that financed the revolution against British rule. Many of the Founding Fathers were Freemasons who realised the debt they owed the Knights Templar. While the capital of this new republic, Washington DC, was built along Masonic lines.
To prove the Templar presence in America – with the Holy Grail – supporters of the theory have pointed to the Money Pit on Oak Island, a booby-trapped, underground space, which it’s believed contains Templar treasure. Or there is the Newport Tower on Rhode Island that some argue is a Templar fortification. The Westford Knight is a heavily eroded tombstone of a medieval warrior. And the Kensington Rune Stone is proof that Europeans who communicated using Runic script (Vikings), got to America way before Columbus.
