The fall of Acre – two hundred years today – 1291

Acre is now the modern Israeli town of Akko – but back in the 12th and 13th centuries, it was a bastion of Templar and Hospitaller power in the region. A bastion of crusader strength against the Saracens. Long after Jerusalem had fallen to Saladin, Acre held out but in 1291 – it finally fell. I visited in March this year and took some photos including the secret Templar tunnel under the castle.
